Embark on this most popular of Rocky Mountaineers rail route, the First Passage to the West. Retrace the steps of the 19th century explorers who first traversed this untamed wilderness to unite the country by connecting British Columbia to Canada.  Departing Banff or Lake Louise, you travel on this Luxury rail journey through travel past the Castle Mountain, through the legendary Spiral Tunnels, Hoodoos, along the rushing waters of the Kicking Horse River traversing the Continental Divide.  Your journey will further take you past Black Canyon,  Cisco Crossing and on to Vancouver with an overnight stay in Kamloops.  

Your Rocky Mountaineer train offers the highest in terms of service and experience in two classes of comfort and luxury – GoldLeaf Service and SilverLeaf Service.  On board experience includes friendly Hosts, gourmet breakfasts and lunches, and endlessly astounding views. Itinerary

DAY 1 – Banff/Lake Louise to Kamloops.

This morning, you will board the Rocky Mountaineer at Banff or Lake Louise (as per the choice of journey you have booked to start your First Passage to the West Rail Tour.  Journey onboard the Rocky Mountaineer from the alpine resort town of Banff to Kamloops, lying in the rain shadow leeward of the Coast Mountains.  

Enroute, your Rocky Mountaineer rail route, you will traverse through a spectacular array of sceneries, between glacier and snow-capped peaks of the Canadian Rockies over mountain passes and through remarkable tunnels, along rocky lakeshores and across the ranch lands of the Interior. Highlights on today’s journey include the Continental Divide, the Spiral Tunnels, Kicking Horse Canyon, Rogers Pass and Craigellachie, where the last spike of the Canadian Pacific Railway was driven. 

Overnight in Kamloops, BC


DAY 2 – Kamloops to Vancouver.

Continue on your passage west towards the Pacific Ocean and the coastal city of Vancouver. On today's journey, you will witness a dramatic change in scenery as the Rocky Mountaineer moves west  from the desert-like environment of the British Columbia interior, through winding river canyons and pristine forests, to the Coast and Cascade Mountains and the lush green fields of the Fraser Valley. Highlights include the steep slopes and rock sheds along the Thompson River and the rushing waters of Hell's Gate in the Fraser Canyon. Your rail journey ends on arrival in Vancouver this evening.
